Please follow the steps below in order to help your child start in our district #622 band program. As always, please contact your child's middle school band director with any questions. Contact information is listed to the right.

  1. Please check out the instrument demonstration videos with the instruments of the band. Helpful to watch, these videos can help in making an informed decision about instrument selection!
  2. Check out the music store(s) website for instrument rental/purchase options

Listen To Your Instrument

Sample the instruments you are interested in playing. Having an idea of the individual sound of each instrument will help you decide which one you want to play in 6th grade band.

Instruments of the Band

Factors taken into account when selecting the best instrument for your child include:

  • Physical size
  • Dental and lip structure
  • Ease creating a sound correctly on a woodwind or brass instrument
  • Basic musical aptitude
  • Piano background for percussion students
  • Band instrumentation

Make sure your child is ready to start in the District 622 Beginning Band!

  1. District band directors will meet with your child at their elementary school and help them try instruments to make an informed choice.
  2. Rent/Purchase/Rent to own an instrument from an approved instrument vendor - Everything can be taken care of online. Stores will include Eckroth Music, Groth Music, and Schmitt Music. All stores will provide delivery.
  3. If you already own an instrument...make sure it is in working/playable condition for your child.
  4. Apply for a school-owned instrument rental.
    • School-owned instruments are rented to students on a first-come/first-serve basis.
    • A discounted rental fee is based on a free/reduced educational status.
    • Application for Educational Benefits
