The Office of Educational Equity is excited to announce a new initiative called The Young Scholars Program.
Young Scholars is a program designed to increase the proportion of historically underrepresented students in gifted programs. It was adapted from a model begun by Fairfax County, Virginia, and brought to District 622 with a lot of help from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District 196, which started the program three years ago.
Young Scholars is an academic program for high potential students from K-5 who are not likely to be identified for gifted programs by using traditional methods. Students identified will participate in a program that nurtures young scholars to prepare them for more challenging and rigorous courses. This program is in addition to the District’s current High Potential program.
The Young Scholars program will be piloted in three District 622 schools - Richardson, Webster and Skyview Elementary - and will be administered by Katie Allen, Pat Barrett and Michelle Freisinger.
