916 student at John Glenn confirmed with H1N1

As we wrap up another wonderful school year, it is important to remember that there continue to be diagnosed cases of Influenza A within the State of Minnesota. Influenza A is a “family” of viruses that encompasses the seasonal flu virus as well as the H1N1 novel influenza virus (formally referred to as the Swine Flu). Although District 622 has yet to have a confirmed case of H1N1 novel influenza in our student population, the District was notified on June 9 of a positive diagnosis of Influenza A at Cowern Elementary School, which presented with mild symptoms and could be considered a suspect case of H1N1.

In addition, on the last day of school a student in the NE Metro 916 School District Program at John Glenn was also confirmed with H1N1 Novel Influenza. Click here to read the letter from 916 Superintendent Connie Hayes, which was sent to all families in the 916 Program at John Glenn.

Throughout the summer, there will continue to be suspect and confirmed cases of H1N1 throughout the state. As a result, we would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to use healthy habits over the summer, including washing hands and covering coughs. If you or a family member becomes ill with upper respiratory symptoms contact your health care provider. For more information about Influenza A or the H1N1 novel influenza, please visit http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/h1n1/index.html

Best wishes for a safe and fun summer.
