• ISD 622 North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale Schools - Local Literacy Plan

Welcome to the ISD 622 North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale Schools - Local Literacy Plan website.  The purpose of the website is to provide parents and community members with detailed information regarding our local literacy plan.  Our comprehensive literacy plan is intended to ensure that all students reach their full potential as readers and meet district level reading performance benchmarks by the end of 3rd grade.  Visitors will learn about how our balanced-literacy instructional framework supports young readers through differentiated learning experiences, how the Minnesota Academic Standards are embedded into our curriculum at various grade levels, and finally, how students are provided additional support in reading through our various reading intervention programs.

    Understandings
    • Literacy is critical to preparing our students to excel in our changing world.
    • Based on Marie Clay’s definition of reading, we believe that reading and writing are reciprocal message getting/message giving, problem solving activities which increase in power and flexibility the more they are practiced.
    • We believe that to meet the challenges of teaching literacy in the 21st century, we must implement the standards using a Balanced Literacy Framework based on a set of comprehensive principles that honor children’s rights to excellent instruction.
