The Leader in Me
Leader in Me is a whole-school improvement process based on the idea that everyone can be a leader. This evidence-based approach empowers students with the leadership and life-skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Visit The Leader in Me website for more information.
Essential to leadership development is Leader in Me’s unique approach to the application of effective social and emotional skills in real-life situations and student-led learning. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the world's leading organization in the practice of promoting integrated academic, social, and emotional learning for all children, conducted an extensive review of Leader in Me. CASEL determined that the Leader in Me training, support, and materials offer their highest level of support to schools across all five of their recognized settings; classroom, school, family, community, and general. As a result of their review and the research evidence, CASEL recently endorsed Leader in Me as a recommended evidence-based social-emotional learning (SEL) solution.
Weaver's Story with The Leader in Me
Our journey with The Leader in Me began in 2015 with a whole-school book study on The Leader in Me. We were filled with hope and motivation. We were excited to see a school community transform into a happier place, where staff and students were encouraged to lead and learn together. We wanted more for our kids than just high academics. We wanted well-rounded students in social emotional skills, self management, determination, and growth. We started to dream of what we really wanted our students to be like while at Weaver and after they left Weaver. We worked with our parents, students, and community members to discover our vision: Everyone will be individually confident, achieving goals together. In order to reach this vision, our Weaver mission is to support everyone to LEAD: Life-long learners Empowered for Achievement with Determination. We set out on the journey to work on our mission, in alignment with The Leader in Me.
Ever since our first year of implementation in 2016, we have seen so many wonderful opportunities and changes for our students and staff. Our school has felt a sense of cohesion in our community. Our staff are happy to be at school each day. Our students have learned to become better problem solvers and reflective thinkers. Sure, test scores are important to a point, but the growth and determination in our students is what puts the biggest smiles on our faces. Students have taken on leadership roles in many areas of the school. Students have proposed many other service projects that benefit others. Students are encouraged to find their voice and use it for positive purposes.
We will continue to learn and grow as we continue our Leader in Me journey. We will continue to learn and lead together as a school community. We will continue to value each other so we make strong connections with students, families, and staff. That is our core belief.
