Educational Equity

AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is recognized globally as a program that promotes student success in school while preparing them for a college/career path after high school.

ISD 622 offers AVID at all of our secondary schools.

Goal 1: Student achievement: To foster student success and learning with innovative initiatives while identifying and addressing the systematic barriers that impede academic success.

Goal 2: Increase the intercultural competency of staff, students and board members.

Goal 3: Increase opportunities for cross-cultural interactions and an integrated learning environment.

Providing scholars with a healthy, fair, safe, and a moral start in life and a successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.

At ISD 622 we commit each day to ensure the safety and development of all our students without regard to race, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, immigration status or national origin. 

We have taken specific strides to provide safe and inclusive environments for our students and families who are LGBTQ+.

Definitions

• Sexual Orientation: Who you are attracted to physically, romantically and emotionally along a continuum.
• Gender Identity: A person's deeply-felt sense of being male, female or other. It is multi-layered. There are many ways to "know" and express oneself. 
• LGBTQ+: Acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer and/or questioning. 
• Gay: Describes someone who is physically and romantically attracted to people of the same gender. Sometimes used to refer to just gay men. 
• Lesbian: A woman who is physically and romantically attracted to other women. 
• Bisexual: A person who is attracted to people of more than one gender. 
• Heterosexual: Someone who is physically and romantically attracted to people of a gender other than their own. Often referred to as "straight"
• Transgender: An adjective that describes an individual whose deeply felt sense of gender identity does not match their gender assigned at birth. 
• Queer: A more fluid umbrella term used by people to describe their identity or community that does not align with cultural expectations or stereotypes of gender or sexual orientation.

At every level of our district, we have programs intended to foster safe environments for LGBTQ+ folks in 622. These programs are some of the ways we accomplish this.

Staff Affinity Group

The LGBTQ+ Staff Affinity Group focuses on providing a safe and inclusive space to discuss issues facing LGBTQ+ staff within the district and to advocate for the support of LGBTQ+ students. We would like to extend a welcome to any new members and our allies interested in attending to join us. 

GSA

GSA is a student-run organization that unites LGBTQ+ and allied students to build community and organize around issues impacting them and their schools. Both middle schools and both high schools have active GSAs.

The ISD 622 Office of Educational Equity is funded by the state of Minnesota's Achievement and Integration revenue.
