Understandings- Literacy is critical to preparing our students to excel in our changing world.
- Based on Marie Clay’s definition of reading, we believe that reading and writing are reciprocal message getting/message giving, problem solving activities which increase in power and flexibility the more they are practiced.
- We believe that to meet the challenges of teaching literacy in the 21st century, we must implement the standards using a Balanced Literacy Framework based on a set of comprehensive principles that honor children’s rights to excellent instruction.
