  • Youth Leadership Council Summer Retreat

Students and staff from North, Tartan, and Mahtomedi High School participated in the first ever Youth Leadership Council Summer Retreat on August 15-17 in the District Education Center board room. Giving up three days of summer, the students planned strategies to address issues of educational equity and social justice in their high schools and local community.

Training in yoga, mindfulness, and other self-care methods was provided. The Northside Research team from Minneapolis walked students through the Participatory Action Research process, and the retreat ended with a visit to the RACE exhibit at the Science Museum and time to plan for the next steps for YLC each high school.

    Summer Sampler Camp 2016

Mr. Johnathan Gavin and his team once again put on a fantastic Summer Sampler for students from Richardson Elementary in North St. Paul and OH Anderson in Mahtomedi. Over two weeks in June, students got to tour the Mill City Museum, the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge in Eagan, and much more. A focus on building social skills led to positive collaboration and team work across all grade levels. John Glenn middle schoolers got to participate as mentors to the grade schoolers. Thanks to Johnny Gavin, Mark Brandwein, Annette Colter, AJ Cook, Gavin Graham, Sharma Kuria, and Alecia Salo for all their work!

    Young Scholar Success!

When the Young Scholar program began at Richardson, Skyview, and Webster Elementary schools in 2009, the goal was to reduce the opportunity gap for placement in advanced and accelerated classes. Those original 3rd graders are now freshmen in high school, and they are helping us reach that goal! The chart below demonstrates that over 80% of Young Scholar grads in 9th grade are taking at least one advanced class.

Welcome to the 2015-16 School Year!
Greetings from the EEA! I am excited to begin my new role as facilitator for the Educational Equity Alliance. While the EEA has been in transition over the past several months, we are excited to continue our mission of removing barriers for all 622 and 832 students and their families. Already, our Young and Growing Scholars teachers are identifying this year's "scholars", and our YLC high schoolers are planning this year's projects and college visits.

Prior to taking this position I taught English at Tartan High for eight years, and was also the Tartan AVID coordinator for the last three years. I believe that equity, empathy, and cultural competency should be at the heart of our work as educators. If you want to join the EEA in helping remove barriers to success for our students, or if you have ideas or feedback about EEA programs, please contact me anytime.

Stay tuned to this page for program updates, and have a great school year!
