Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood Screening is free and provides a simple check of how your child is developing and growing. It's also a great way to learn about community resources that can support you and your family. Screening is for children 3-5 years old and is required by the State of Minnesota before entering public Kindergarten.
What Is Early Childhood Screening?
During screening, your child will complete age-appropriate activities with a trained professional.
The screening includes checks in the following areas:
- Cognitive development
- Large and small muscle development
- Communication skills
- Social and emotional development
- Vision & hearing, height & weight
- Health history & immunization review
Why Should I Have My Child Screened?
Minnesota state law requires Early Childhood Screening for all children ages 3-5 before they begin Kindergarten. This free screening helps families:
- Learn about their child's development
- Access community resources and early learning programs
- Receive additional support if needed
When Should I Have My Child Screened?
While screening can take place anytime between ages 3 and 5, screening is recommended at age 3. Screening early:
- Identifies developmental, health, hearing, or vision concerns sooner
- Allows more time to connect with helpful resources
- Ensures children are fully prepared for Prek and Kindergarten
