Middle School Advanced Learning Opportunities
Programming at the middle school entails academic challenges through advanced courses (Enriched Language Arts and Accelerate Math), as well as differentiation and enrichment opportunities in the regular classes. Additionally, enrichment is provided through field trips, competitions, clubs, and special events.
Advanced course placement is determined by a multitude of data points. We look at MCA and FAST/MAP data, student performance in class, and teacher recommendations. Placement tests will also be given for students coming from different schools or for those advocating for themselves. Scores on the placement test will determine if advancement is necessary. Please contact Jen Neisse at John Glenn for more information.
Some of the opportunities in Advanced classes include the Park Square Theater Immersion Day, Kid Conferences, Kids Philosophy Slam, St. Cloud State University Math Contest, and the Children's Book Project.
During and after school opportunities include Knowledge Bowl, Math Team, Project Citizen, Newspaper, Yearbook, and the National Geographic Bee. Field Trip opportunities may include Creativity Festival, St. Cloud State University Math Contest, Young Author's Conference, Park Square Theater Immersion Day, and the Project Citizen State Showcase at the Capitol.
Other opportunities include Northwestern University Academic Talent Search (taking the ACT or SAT), North Suburban Summer Academy, Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth (Saturday and Summer classes) and University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (accelerated math program for highly exceptional).
