• STEM Apps and Websites

    Below is a list of fun STEM apps your child can explore. They are all free to download. I have included a brief description of the app and the purpose behind using it. Your student has used one or more of these apps in class. I have also included a list of interactive, STEM websites your child may want to visit during their time at home. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. 

     

    Quiver is a fun augmented reality app that combines art and science. You can go to quivervision.com to download a free coloring page. Print the page out, color it, and use the Quiver app to make the picture come to life!

    Robot Maker is a free app available in the app store. This app allows your student to create their own robots, solve robot puzzles, and color different robot coloring pages. It is a great app to include engineering into their day virtually. This app is appropriate for younger students.

    Play and Learn Science is a great app for younger students to explore science. It was created by PBS kids and allows your child to investigate different science topics such as weather, temperature, shadows, and much more! This app is appropriate for students in Kindergarten and 1st grade.

    Builds That! is another app created by PBS kids. This app explores science with the Cat in the Hat. Children can build slides to explore friction, build bridges, and sort different objects. This is appropriate for kindergarten age students.

      Solar Walk is one of the apps we have been using in 3rd grade. This app allows students to transport themselves into space. They are able to explore different planets, stars, and moons. It is a fun, interactive way to learn more about our solar system.

    Another app we have been using is Planetary. This app uses the power of augmented reality to bring planets, asteroids, and spacecrafts to life. Your child can explore the inside of a spacecraft with Planetary. The app requires a back-facing camera, and the PlanetARy sheets to be printed (can be done through the app).

    Chromville is a fun, interactive app that also uses augmented reality (AR) technology. This app has students color sheets and answer questions. Once they open the app they are able to show the camera on the worksheet and play a fun game related to their work! We have used this in 2nd grade.

     If you are wanting to practice multiplication with your student, but do not have the flashcards this is the app for you. Free to download, multiplication flash cards is a great app to use at home to ensure your child is remembering their multiplication skills.

     Another great, free programming app is Robot School: Programming for kids. This app allows your child to plug in directions to program a robot. It is a fun way to practice coding in a game-like environment.

     The Nasa Visualization Explorer is a great resource for your space-loving student! If your students can’t get enough of space-based research, this app lets them explore earth and the entire solar system through the eyes of their fleet of research spacecraft.

     Virtual Fieldtrips

    All of these websites include a virtual field trip option. The websites are all linked. You simply need to click on the title and it will bring you directly to the website. 

    • Georgia Aquarium - the Georgia Aquarium may be closed, but their webcams are still running. Go to this site to watch various sea creatures from the Georgia Aquarium. They are live webcams so every day is different!
    • Stellarium - do you ever wonder what constellations you are seeing at night? Stellarium is a fun, interactive field trip that allows you to explore the stars and constellations. Allow the website to use your location and it will show you what stars, constellations, and planets you are seeing outside.
    • NASA - NASA has various virtual experiences on their website. You can watch videos about different spacecrafts, explore missions, and interact with the Mars rover. 
    • The Nature Conservatory- The Nature Conservatory has videos students can watch to learn about various ecosystems around the world. They have a great virtual experience about coral reefs!
    • Virtual Road Trip - this link will take you on a road trip from home and allow you to go on a bunch of different virtual field trips. There are museums, natural landmarks, and other awesome destinations. Thank you to Maddie for sharing this resource!

    STEM Websites

    All of the websites are linked. You simply need to click on the title and it will bring you directly to the website. 

    • Code.org - this is my favorite coding program that is free and easily accessible to students. If students use this website, they can program animals to dance, code minecraft characters through mazes, or make their own flappy bird course. 
    • National Geographic Kids - a great option for your child to explore our world. There are games, articles, and interesting videos. This website combines STEM and social studies. 
    • Kinetic City - science games for students in grades 3-5. There are interactive, guided activities for students to participate in and explore. Some require additional materials but they are typically items found in your household. Requires Adobe Flashplayer.
    • Mystery Science - typically this website requires a subscription, but they have opened it to parents and students to use due to the recent outbreak. There are many fantastic lessons for students to engage in, as well as fun videos answering common questions. I highly recommend visiting this site with your student. 
    • NASA Kids' Club - The NASA Kids' Club is a games-based website that stimulates children's interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by incorporating five skill levels, national education standards and NASA content
