My name is Tom Schmit and I am love being the A-L counselor at Maplewood Middle School!
Prior to working at Maplewood, I worked as a school counselor in our district at the ALC (Area Learning Center) and before that I was a counselor at North High School. I enjoy working with students and families in a wide variety of areas--academic, personal/social and college/careers. I also taught at the high school level for a few years.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family. Over the summer we all when to Colorado to visit friends, hanging out in the mountains--looking at them, not climbing them--and even riding a few horses. I also love spending time in my pottery studio--making something (pottery) out of almost nothing (clay).
I selected this picture of me on a horse, not because I am great at riding horses, rather, I picked this one because it represents me a bit out of my comfort zone--employing a growth mindset ("I can do this--and not fall off in front of my whole family) and not a fixed mindset ("There is no way I am getting on that horse!").
I simply love the energy and excitement of MMS and I am thrilled to be a part of the team here!
