Many ways to learn more about District 622 funding request on May 14 ballot

March 18, 2019 - North St. Paul: On May 14, 2019, North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District 622 residents will be asked to vote on district-wide school improvements to provide safe, up-to-date, and healthy learning environments for all students.

The funding request is based on more than two years of planning, community input, and research which found:

● Most district school buildings are over 50 years old and are not designed for today’s learning environment.
● Many buildings have traffic congestion, safety, and security concerns.
● Classroom furniture is designed for lecture, with little flexibility for small group, large group, and one-on-one learning.
● Many buildings have roofs, parking lots, fixtures, heating systems, and equipment in need of updates and repair.
● Updating all existing buildings was more costly and less efficient than renovating, consolidating, and building some new schools.

The School Board unanimously approved bringing the bond request to voters on a May 14, 2019 election. If approved by voters, funds would be used to update facilities across the district:

● Add secure entrances to all schools
● Provide all schools with modern furniture and flexible classroom spaces for independent, small group and large group learning
● Renovate and/or expand five schools
● Build two new elementary schools
● Close or repurpose four schools

The changes would result in reducing from three middle schools to two, which would align with the two high schools, and consolidating nine elementary schools into seven, larger, renovated schools.

The tax increase for the average homeowner is estimated to be only $5 per month even though construction costs would total $275 million. This is because the district is paying off old debt - providing an opportunity to reinvest in schools by taking on new debt with little additional cost
to taxpayers.
