622 Chromebook/Device Information & Support
We are excited to be able to offer our students a 1:1 device experience for the 2022-2023 school year. We hope this document will provide information and support.
- District 622 purchased enough devices for every student in grades K-12 to have their own, thanks to a generous grant from 3M and from federal Coronavirus funds.
- All students should be using their District 622-issued device for both in-person and online learning.
- Technology support is only provided for district-owned devices.
Find out more specific information about your 622 device below.

Device protection plan
A device protection plan is available for devices (Chromebooks and tablets) that are part of the District’s 1:1 take-home device program (Grades 6-12) and for K-12 families enrolled in 622 Online. The protection plan is optional. However, families will be responsible for the cost of any damage without the protection plan.
The plan cost is $30 per student per school year. If your student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, please complete this form. If your family has not yet completed the application for educational benefits for this year, please do so by visiting this link.
By choosing not to participate in the protection plan, families will be required to reimburse the school district up to the total replacement cost of a device for any repair or replacement of a damaged or stolen device in the care of their students.
If you would like to sign up for this year's protection plan, please do so by Friday, September 30, 2022.

Classroom Use
In what ways will Chromebooks be used in the classroom?
The goal of the device initiative is to increase students’ communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity while providing them with a device that will allow them to make decisions based on what is best for learning rather than on availability and access to technology.
It will be up to each member of the school faculty to determine how to best incorporate Chromebooks into his or her curriculum. All teachers have been provided training on how to best incorporate technology into their classrooms and will continue in ongoing professional learning as well.
-
Internet Access
Am I required to have internet access at home for use with the Chromebook?
You are not required to have internet access at home, but it certainly is helpful, and students will have increased access to tools and resources when they are connected to the Internet. If families do not have Internet access at home, they can employ the following strategies.
- Chromebooks have many tools that are available offline. Students will be trained on their use.
- Wireless is available in many public locations within the North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale School District.
- Qualifying (Free and Reduced Lunch) District 622 families can get low-cost internet service from the following vendors:
-
Acceptable Use
Take-Home
Will students take the devices home?
PreK - grade 5 will not take their devices home.
Students in grades 6-12 will carry the devices home in order to do homework. Students are required to charge the device at home so it is ready for classroom use.
Will students keep the Chromebooks over breaks?
Students in grades 6-12 will keep the Chromebooks over all breaks except for summer break unless otherwise required by the District. The Chromebooks will be returned at the end of the school year for storage, maintenance, and repair.
What if a student forgets to charge the Chromebook?
Reasonable accommodation will be made so that the student can continue to participate in class activities.

Care and Maintenance
Students are responsible for the general care of their Chromebook. The Chromebooks are designed for school use and should be treated with care. Here are a few recommended precautions:
- Treat your Chromebook as you would any valuable electronic device.
- When not being used, store the Chromebooks in a secure place, out of sight.
- Be gentle with the screen, keyboard, trackpad, and ports.
- Don’t add stickers or markings to the Chromebook.
- Don’t eat or drink near the Chromebook.
- Avoid extreme heat or cold.
- Do not take your Chromebook apart or make changes to the hardware or system software.
- Do not lend your Chromebook to anyone.
- Report any damage to your teacher or school media center immediately.
-
Responsible Use
Digital citizenship is an essential 21st-century skill. During the school year, teachers will be reviewing appropriate online behavior and acceptable use of resources. It’s important to maintain a family dialogue about educational, recreational, and social use of the Chromebook and other devices your student accesses. Chromebooks are connected to a network that is filtered for inappropriate materials, but user responsibility is still the best way to avoid pitfalls in the online world. Remember Chromebook use is monitored.
-
Here Are a Few Tips
- Use Internet devices in a central location at home, rather than behind closed doors.
- Help your student to focus on completing tasks and assignments before any recreational activities.
- Help your student solve technical glitches by recording exactly what went wrong and when.
- Ensure that your child understands that he or she should not give personal information to any person or any website without checking with an adult first.
- Talk with your student about cyberbullying--encouraging him/her to be kind and to communicate clearly online.
- Advise your child that anything they post, text, or upload may be forwarded, copied, and published to anyone--including future education admissions offices and employers.
- Only registered users in ISD 622 will be able to login to the Chromebook, and all usage can be monitored.
